Securing the marketWith the Spanish presidency starting work on an energy action plan, Bogdan Marcinkiewicz says now is the time to create a common, secure European gas market.
The issue of creating a legal framework for a gas market in the EU is certainly one of the most important tasks Europe has to face up to. Gas supplies play a crucial role for the European economy, which should not be underestimated. Recently, Europeans have witnessed a major gas crisis which has had an impact on their lives, especially in Eastern Europe. This winter we are forced to once again rethink the rules which ought to govern the European gas market. During the debate on how to shape gas supply legislation, we should bear in mind the fundamental values on which the EU was built: solidarity and a free market.
Certainly, there is an urgent need to diversify the gas supplies which play so crucial role in today’s economy. Gas supplies from new sources are necessary if we want to weaken the negative impact of the gas disruptions which in the past led to closed factories and schools, paralysing the economies of member states. It’s an essential condition if we want to think about energy security. Moreover, we must create the necessary infrastructure, without which we will be incapable of fighting another gas crisis which may occur in the future.
The main aim of the EU legislation regarding gas supplies should be the establishment of a common market which would be able to support member states in an emergency caused by interruption in gas supplies. >>
